Custom vehicle design & special vehicles | from concept to build-ready design
ABID supports companies that want to develop a custom vehicle or special vehicle: from the first idea to a design that is right in use, brand presence and buildability.
In custom vehicle design, it’s about a smart layout, strong styling and practical details that make the difference in production.
Think body- and coachbuilding projects, service and workshop units, hospitality/event concepts, race support, and custom trailer design as part of a complete solution.
We start with a clear concept (layout + look & feel) and develop it into a package that helps you decide internally and enables a builder/partner to move forward immediately.
This custom vehicle design process helps you make decisions faster and prevents costly detours during production.

Looking for custom vehicle design or special vehicle design for an application that goes beyond standard solutions? You’re in the right place.

Custom vehicle design? Who this is for:
ABID works with companies building something beyond standard: trailer builders, coachbuilders, mobility innovators and organizations with a specific application.
Typical situations:
- You have an idea or sketch, but need a strong layout + brand presence
- You’re looking for a “family” design = a unique brand identity
- You want faster internal decision-making (management/engineering/sales)
- You want a design that is realistic to build (not a “show model”)
How I help (deliverables)
With custom vehicle design you get a clear output set, aligned with your phase — from vehicle body design to coachbuilding design:
-
Concept & layout: smart routing, storage, access, ergonomics
-
Styling (look & feel): proportions, surfacing, lines, details, brand expression
-
Buildability: decisions that help a builder move faster toward production
-
Visuals (optional): assets for pitch, sales or internal buy-in
Result: fewer endless iterations and faster direction, alignment and progress.

Project types (custom vehicles)
I’m often asked to support design projects around:
-
Service & workshop vehicles (workflow, storage, maintenance-friendly)
-
Body & coachbuilding (logical layout, recognizable design language)
-
Hospitality / event concepts (experience, routing, presentation)
-
Race support / transport solutions (fast, smart, robust, brand)
-
Demo / showroom units (presentation, brand story, visibility)
-
Special vehicles for niche applications
Is your type not listed? No problem — tell me what you want to build and we’ll define the best approach.
Often it comes down to coachbuilding design and vehicle body design, where layout and brand presence must work together.
Family design (unique brand identity)
Many companies build multiple models or variants.
That’s when it makes sense to create a consistent design language: a family design.
It makes every variant instantly feel “yours” — recognizable, professional and aligned with your audience.
Two key benefits:
-
Stronger brand presence (you stand out in a world of “standard builds”)
-
Faster development (variants build on the same design logic)

Process in 4 steps
1 Quick intake (15 min)
Goal, application, constraints, timing.
2 Concept phase
Layout + 1–2 strong styling directions.
3 Development into a build-ready design
We develop the chosen direction into a package your builder/supplier can work with effectively.
4 Delivery & next steps
You receive the files/visuals and a clear proposal for follow-up (variants, further development, prototype or presentation assets).

References from real projects
ABID has experience with design and development work for a wide range of clients in custom vehicle design and trailers.
I’ve had the opportunity to work for, among others,
Ligthart Mobile, 4DB, Burgers Racetrailers and Roelofsen Horsetrailers.
In addition, I’ve done design work for Snoeks Automotive (e.g. double cab development) and Berco, which I cannot share due to confidentiality.
Across these projects the core need is consistent: a smart layout, strong brand presence and decisions that truly work in production.
For many clients, custom vehicle design is the bridge between idea, brand identity and buildability.
Frequently asked questions about custom vehicle design
What do you mean by custom vehicle design?
Custom vehicle design means designing a vehicle that fits your application, workflow and brand presence exactly.
Not only visually strong, but also logical and realistic to build.
Do you design only the exterior or also the layout?
Both. The strength is in the combination: layout, ergonomics, access/hatches and styling reinforce each other.
This prevents a vehicle/trailer from looking great, but disappointing in real use.
What types of vehicles can you design?
Think service and workshop trailers, hospitality and event vehicles, race trailers, demo/showroom trailers, campers and other special vehicles.
Is your type not listed? No problem — if it’s custom and it needs to be built, it usually fits.
Can you help if we already have a base design?
Yes. I can step in as a design partner to make the concept smarter: optimize the layout, refine details,
and strengthen the design language so it becomes “build-ready” faster for your builder/supplier.
What does a custom vehicle design project cost?
That depends on complexity and phase (concept vs. more developed). After a short intake I can provide a clear range
and a proposal aligned with your planning.
How long does such a project take?
A first concept direction can often be done quickly. The total lead time mostly depends on the number of feedback rounds,
decision-making and how much development you need for the next step toward production.
Do you deliver visuals for pitch or sales?
Yes. Visuals help a lot to gain alignment faster — internally and toward clients. This can be part of the design process
or a separate step.
Do you work under an NDA?
Yes, an NDA is possible. We can also align on the main outlines first before you share all details.
What do you need from me to start?
A short description of the application, approximate dimensions, an indication of timing and any sketches or references.
Then I’ll schedule a short intake to sharpen the scope.
Do you also do custom trailer design?
Yes. Custom trailer design is often part of a complete solution, together with layout, branding and buildability for production.
